Effects of Cohesiveness on Inter-sexual Dominance Relationships and Spatial Structure among Group-Living Virtual Entities

چکیده
Since male primates are bigger and stronger than females, they are by default considered dominant. When in a cohesively grouping ape (but not in its loosely grouping relative), females often appear dominant to males, the static image of female weakness is maintained and female dominance is attributed to high, species-specific co-operation among several females against single males. In this paper, an individual-oriented model is used to produce a parsimonious alternative: female dominance over males may directly vary with groupcohesiveness without species-specific differences in co-operative tendencies among females. The model consists of a homogeneous world in which entities roam. Entities are so constructed as to have merely a tendency to group and perform dominance interactions. ‘Male’ entities (StrongTypes) are characterised by a higher initial dominance value and intensity of attack than ‘female’ entities (called WeakTypes). Dominance values change and evolve due to the self-reinforcing effects of winning and losing contests. In the model, more rank-overlap between both types arises from a stronger feedback between dominance and spatial structure in cohesive than in looser groupings. Biological implications of these phenomena and testable hypotheses for real animals are discussed.

Sexual Attraction and Inter-sexual Dominance among Virtual Agents
In many group-living primates, males are dominant over females, but despite this dominance, they allow females access to resources during the period when females are sexually attractive but only then and not otherwise. Conventionally, such male ‘courtesy’ is explained as a special strategy to gain mating access to females. In the present paper I propose a simpler hypothesis that is based on an ...
متن کاملRisk Sensitive and Ambiguity Reducing Dominance Interactions in a Virtual Laboratory
In this paper the effects of dominance interactions on social-spatial structure (i.e. centrality of dominants) and social interaction patterns are studied in a simple virtual world: artificial entities inhabiting it are just grouping and performing dominance interactions in which the effects of winning and losing are self-reinforcing. I compare three strategies of attack. The first is based on ...
متن کاملSpatial Centrality of Dominants Without Positional Preference
In many group-living animals dominant individuals occupy the center of a group. This is generally thought to reflect a preference for locations, that provide optimal protection against predators. However, in this paper I will show that such spatial-structure also emerges among artificial entities that lack preference for any spatial location. The artificial entities dwell in a homogeneous world...

Although there exist advantages to group-living in comparison to a solitary lifestyle, costs and gains of group-living may be unequally distributed among group members. Predation risk, vigilance levels and food intake may be unevenly distributed across group spatial geometry and certain within-group spatial positions may be more or less advantageous depending on the spatial distribution of thes...

Lifestyle is a concept that generally includes social, economic, and cultural components. It has a great influence on introduction of behavior and attitudes of people in a community. According to various scholars, lifestyle is closely related to the quality of life. An example of lifestyle is quality of location and living space affecting the architecture of house interior. This study aimed at ...
